Sean Avery’s indefinite suspension from the Dallas Stars has sparked great controversy. Avery was originally suspended from the team by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman for six games after he referred to his ex-girlfriends as “sloppy-seconds” on national Canadian television. Although Bettman’s motivations for suspending him were unclear, he recently spoke at a luncheon where he stated that Avery’s comments offended him as parent.

Bettman stated: “To be perfectly honest I wouldn’t want to have to explain to my 12-year-old daughter what he said.”

Sports figures in general are often upheld by our community as role models, even when some have committed acts of violence on the court/field/rink and off. What does engaging sports figures in the anti-violence against women movement look like? Is there a space for this in your community?
